What we do at Back in Business Physiotherapy

At Back in Business Musculoskeletal & Sports Physiotherapy we take a multi-modal approach to treatment, as we find that most of our clients have multi-dimensional aspects to their condition.

This holistic approach is based on 25 years of clinical experience in various countries and in various clinical settings around the world. I am a great believer of gaining clinical expertise through the mentoring and nurturing experiences of learning from experienced practitioners in institutions striving for excellence. As such, I spent some 10 years working in various clinical settings in Australia, Germany and Switzerland . This involved management and treatment of younger and older people, elite and non-elite athletes, professional and non-professional sports people as well as professional dancers. During this time I attended continuing education courses annually, presented by international practitioners of exercise therapy, joint manipulation and muscle energy techniques. I also attended several conferences in Biomechanics, Neurophysiology and Clinical Sciences, as well as assisting in clinical research at the Rennbahn Klinik in Basel . This period of my life gave me great opportunities to travel for both work and pleasure, participate in sport at an elite level, learn several languages, as well as gain insight into humanity.

After 8 years of clinical experience I returned to Australia and undertook a Masters in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy. Since graduating in 1995, I have continued meeting the requirements of the MPA by undertaking continuing education annually. Furthermore, I have continued to espouse the values of clinical reasoning by constantly analysing the gaps in my knowledge, as well as that of the profession. Hereby the challenges of daily clinical practice are tackled by literature searches, attendances at conferences, participating in workshops and undertaking further post graduate studies in the areas of Exercise and Sports Science as well as Health Science Education . Since it takes a minimum of 10 years to develop expertise, I feel like I am getting closer to 'enlightenment'. However, some big questions still remain, which will continue to challenge clinicians and hence the profession alike. As such we promote the use of a systematic approach to assessment and treatment, which leaves no place for dogma and plenty of scope for evaluation & re-evaluation of outcomes, which enable 'reflective skills' by the practitioner as well as allow the client to ascertain progress. These reflective skills have been termed cognition and meta-cognition and reflect the gathering body of knowledge which mitigates the use of treatment protocols in favour of a clinical reasoning approach to the delivery of 'best practice'.

Treatment techniques which we employ include joint mobilistion, dry needling (with acupuncture needles using Real Time Ultrasound), soft tissue massage, EMG biofeedback, education, exercise, taping, electrotherapy, myofascial releases and muscle energy techniques. We also do one-on-one Pilates using Real Time Ultrasound as biofeedback. Additionally, we also consider global health, immune and nutritional status as it affects the musculokeletal system. We uphold the principles of practice of the APA and understand that we have a duty of care based on our professional competency standards. Where necessary we refer clients to other health professionals. We only employ physiotherapists who demonstrate a commitment to post graduate continuing education. Finally, our aims and objectives reflect the goals that the client has set. As such we are client oriented and consumer focused to provide the excellence of care we would personally expect if we were receiving treatment.

In 2010 I was a co-author of a book on Whole Body Vibration. This was the first book ever written on the subject. Hence, we use Whole Body Vibration to stimulate the growth of bone and muscle. Additional equipment in use are a Pilates Allegro Reformer, cable weight machine, Erg concept II rowing machine and virtual reality training with the Wiifit.
